Slow service. Heard a microwave being used in the kitchen. Amazing tacos.

My husband and I both had a craving for some authentic Mexican food a few nights ago. There are quite a few options for this near our apartment and after driving around to check out a couple, we picked this one because it was still open at 8pm and had some customers inside. We noticed it because it just says "MEXICAN FOOD" outside. It was small inside with comfortable seating and a loud television broadcasting in Spanish. Seems like a pretty standard hole-in-the-wall joint. Our waitress presented us with a basket of tortilla chips and cup of salsa right away. It was amazing -- we couldn't stop eating the chips and salsa until they were gone. For dinner, he had a steak burrito and I had a taco. I had ordered chicken tacos, but was presented with steak tacos. I figured that it was a miscommunication on both our parts so I didn't want to raise a huge stink about it. Eating the steak was really painful for me (I'm a vegetarian and only eat chicken on the rare occasion) but I have to admit it was pretty good. (As expected, I did get sick the next day from it, but that's because my body hasn't had meat like that in years.) The rice on the side was great! We each had a bottle of Mexican soda to compliment our meals (Mexican food is about the only time I'm willing to drink soda). Despite the mix-up with my food, we still left a good tip. Family/local restaurants are our favorite and we'd rather support them than somewhere like Taco B[H]ell. We'll probably be back.

This restaurant may have a real name, but to my co-workers and I, it has always been and will remain "Mexican Food", due to their awning proclaiming that - and no other name. Only recently have they put up a neon sign with their name - La Quiringua. But it's still "Mexican Food" to us! Mexican Food is a pretty standard taqueria, serving up large portions of burritos, tacos, tortas, and enchiladas. It's a pretty popular place around lunchtime, as their prices are cheap and the food is decent. That's just it - decent. I haven't been blown away here, but haven't really had a bad experience either (well, aside from a chicken bone in my burrito once...). It's totally middle of the road, cheap Mexican food that's good every once in a while. Recommended for an occasional lunch or cheap dinner. Service can be a little slow (it's a 3-person operation) but friendly!

I like this place, come here a lot for lunches and people always like it, cheap, good, and friendly. Flautas are good as is anything with the verde sauce.

This is by far the best authentic Mexican food I have ever had! (even better than places in Mexico)You would never know it by the looks of it ( its in a strip mall with a sign that just says Mexican Food,no joke). Every time I go there I get the chicken taco dinner which comes with three small perfectly prepared and juicy tacos with rice and beans, which for a average size girl its enough to split into two meals. I also get the chips and salsa and rice water to split with my boyfriend. The seasoning they use for the tacos is so delicious! The salsa is the perfect mix of mild salsa with a slight kick. Even the refried beans are really good. My boyfriend usually gets the torta and he said it is really good, not the best but still really good. I wish they would invest in a new sign that actually has the name, but who knows maybe the quality of food would go down to pay for it!

I like La Quiringua. There are two things that are key indicators for a Mexican restaurant: How is the salsa and do Mexicans eat there. I am particularly fond of the salsa here, and yes, I often see Mexicans eating there. This is truly authentic Mexican food. I liked the place better several years ago when it was "El Valle". However, the food is good if somewhat simple. At lunch at least, the food is prepared quickly. The place is nothing fancy. The service is good, but slows some with the peak. Hey, it's a hole in the wall, little restaurant. Go there and enjoy.

It's hard these days in this country to not find Latinos in a particular area. Whenever I travel to different parts of the country, I look for places like this: hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants that may offer the food I got used to in Arizona. The difference between these places and what I actually like is that these places are cheaper and lower quality. La Quiringua compares well to places I ate at in Roswell, Georgia; Bridgeport, Washington; Shelbyville, Tennessee; Montgomery, West Virginia and others. All of these communities have the commonality that they have sizable, poorer Latino communities. This results in the restaurants catering to these communities being cheap and of lower quality as the people that have a lot of money to spend on restaurants in those communities are less likely to eat there. One of the tests I do is to try their carne asada. The "asada" comes from the fact that it should be grilled, and have a distinct grilled and slightly aromatic flavors from the rub and actually putting the meat on the grill as opposed to dropping it in a pan to cook. Cheaper places do the latter because they don't have the grills necessary to make the asada happen. La Quiringua is the latter. I didn't expect much from Mexican in Chicagoland, but I think I expected better than what we got. I had the taco plate, which included three tacos. I asked about the chicken (I only get it if it's pollo asado, but they never want to tell me it's not if it isn't), but ended up with two carne asada and one pastor. The plate came with rice and beans. My companion tried to order a "Burrito Suizo" (Swiss burrito), which was said to come with "ranchero sauce" and a side of rice and beans. However, the waitress tried to explain the fact that the burrito had rice and beans in it already and so she didn't need both (although that's what my companion wanted), and ended up writing down what she wanted instead of what was ordered. I guess that's when we should have switched to Spanish, because we never found out what the "ranchero sauce" really entailed. I think it actually came with sauce and cheese, because it would otherwise just be a "wet burrito" so, in that way, it's better she didn't get it (cheese on a burrito is just fucking gross). The burrito sucked but I think my plate was worse. On top of the sorry meat in the tacos, the rice and beans were just horrendous. I mean, I don't think you could do worse than this canned stuff. The saving grace on the tacos were the tortillas, which I immediately recognized as the same brand of Chicago-produced tortillas that we get at the grocery store in Indiana. They're good though. The only plus was that it was relatively cheap. $14 with tax puts it higher than what I would spend at a good taqueria in Arizona, but I figure there's a premium here that I'm forced to pay everywhere. Bonus: go to the panaderia at the other end of the strip mall. They've got good stuff and the owner is really nice.

This was my first time at this place. The service was okay, considering the place was empty, and the food was okay, nothing to write home about. I had a beef burrito, that was bland, with green sauce (I expected Chile Verde) that was also bland. Not terrible, but not good enough to get out of my way to go here.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
